The Downtown Boathouse, located in Hudson River Park, provides free access to the Hudson River waterfront for kayaks and other small craft. This volunteer organization offers free walk up-kayaking from May 15-October 15 on weekends and weekday evenings. It’s true! The only requirement is that you bring a bathing suit and know how to swim. You’re provided with a kayak, life jacket and paddle, then you’re on your own for a 20 minute in a protected area around the boathouse. Kids must be accompanied by an adult in the same boat. The 3-hour kayaking trips are held every weekend from June 11th to September 25th. Those with their own kayaks can usually join in, but plan to be there before 8:AM. Introductory kayak classes are held every Wednesday evening. For those interested in learning to kayak, the boat house is the place to go.
