Overview:
Christo und Jeanne-Claude first
designed the project in 1979 in hopes of implementing it by the mid-1980's. The
actual time is now. The 7,500 Gates will be erected in Central Park, New York
City, for a period of 16 days from February 12 - 27. The height of the gates
will be 16 feet with a width varying from 6 to 18 feet and will follow the edges
of the walkways and will be perpendicular to the selected 23 miles of footpaths
in Central Park.
Free hanging saffron colored fabric panels suspended from the horizontal top
part of The Gates will come down to approximately 7 feet above the ground. The
Gates will be spaced at 10 to 15 feet intervals allowing the synthetic woven
panels to wave horizontally towards the next gate and be seen from far away
through the leafless branches of the trees.
The 7,500 Gates will be simultaneously opened and The Gates will appear to be a
golden river viewed from the surrounding buildings. The Gates will be in harmony
with the beauty of Central Park. All materials used will be recycled after this
project.
Millions of visitors are expected to experience this art work.
