Mermaid Parade was founded in 1983 by a local non-profit organization.
It's turned into a much anticipated annual event where participants have the opportunity to dress in costumes resembling mermaids, King Neptune, and other sea-related characters.
Drill teams, marching bands, and antique cars also participate in this wacky parade.
Marking the start of swimming season, participants and parade watchers are joined each year by two celebrity guests who portray King Neptune and Queen Mermaid and spend the day presiding |
over other related activities including
cutting ribbons to signify the start of summer and tossing fruit into the ocean
to please the gods.
The Mermaid Parade Ball completes the festivities and gives attendees the
opportunity to dance the day away, help raise money for Coney Island USA, and
watch unique sideshow and burlesque shows.
