Overview:
The West Indian American Day Carnival parade has the distinction of being the largest in New York, with a stunning 3 million people either in or around the parade. Move over, Mardi Gras!

The goal is to celebrate the city’s enormous West Indian population, including immigrants from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Barbados and elsewhere. And the event is truly one of a kind, an explosive kaleidoscope of colorful costumes and exotic movement.

Did we mention food? Feast on ethnic delicacies like jerk chicken, oxtail, fried flying fish, curried goat, roti, callaloo, souse and coconut bread.

The parade wraps up five days of festivities in the area, including “Ladies

Night” music performances featuring top ethnic stars, a children’s parade, steel-band competition and more.

Begun in Harlem in 1947, West Indian Day moved to Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue in 1965 and to Eastern Parkway in 1970.
