Overview:
The West Indian American Day Carnival parade has the distinction of
being the largest in New York, with a stunning 3 million people
either in or around the parade. Move over, Mardi Gras!
|
|
The goal is to celebrate the city’s enormous West Indian
population, including immigrants from Jamaica, Trinidad and
Tobago, Haiti, Barbados and elsewhere. And the event is truly
one of a kind, an explosive kaleidoscope of colorful costumes
and exotic movement. The parade wraps up five days of festivities in the area, including “Ladies |
Night” music performances featuring top ethnic stars, a children’s parade, steel-band competition and more.
Begun in Harlem in 1947, West Indian Day moved to Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue in 1965 and to Eastern Parkway in 1970.
