Overview:

What's an alpaca? Don't know? It doesn't matter. You can still watch alpacas and sheep get their annual haircut at 2 of New York's zoos on April 30th and May 1st at the New York Fleece Festival.
The annual Fleece Festival brings visitors from far and wide to join in this annual event where the fur really flies! Spring means that the fleecy animals at both the Prospect Park and Queens Zoos don't need their woolly coats any longer so the zoo has turned the sheep-shearing into a day long celebration.

Visitors can watch the animals squirm through their haircuts and also view local artisans as they weave, knit, and spin their crafty delights. Your children can participate in the many activities and learn how this wool turns into the clothing they wear.

Spectators can also try their hand at dying natural fibers and the local Mary Lamount Band will provide music for some good old-fashioned dancing. (By the way, an alpaca is a member of the llama family.)
